Veterans' Day Chapel

2012_Veterans_Day_Brian_SandlinBoth Elementary Chapels on November 7 were great blessings to our students and staff.  Those2012_Veterans_Day_Todd_Scott were our annual Veterans' Day Chapel times.  Lt. Col. Brian Sandlin was our speaker for the Kindergarten-second grade Chapel.  Col. Todd Scott spoke to the third-fifth graders.  Both speakers tailored their talks to the age of their student audience just perfectly.

In addition, parents and other relatives who are active duty or retired military were able to come.  Our goal was to honor them.  In reality, their presence was such an honor and privilege to us as a school.  We also were able to honor those from our school family who are currently deployed and were unable to attend.  We are so grateful for their service!

2012_Veterans_Day_Lee_GreenwoodStudents led us in prayer, salutes to the flags and Bible, and some singing.  Fourth graders led us2012_Veterans_Day_God_Bless_America all in "God Bless America."  They also performed Lee Greenwood's, "I'm Proud to Be an American."  In the older student Chapel, Grant Pierce shared his stirring recitation of "The Gettysburg Address.".

"Thank you" to all of our veterans and active duty parents and families.  It is a blessing to have you so involved at CSCS!

Colorado History Week

Children were dressed as bighorn sheep, pioneers, miners, railroad workers, military servants, cowboys, Indians, and even2012_Co_Hist_Molly_Brown tourists.  On top of that, several famous folks and one very familiar lady came to campus to make Colorado History Week a 2012_Co_HIst_Calamity_Janespecial time of learning.

The Unsinkable Molly Brown brought her paddle and told us about her adventures in Colorado and on the Titanic.

Helen Hunt talked about the early days of Colorado Springs and her love for this special place.

Aunt Clara Brown shared how the Lord helped her move from slavery to business-owner to being2012_Co_Hist_Quilt_Lady reunited with her long-lost daughter.

2012_Co_HIst_Aunt_Cllara_BrownCalamity Jane burst into our classrooms to talk about the excitment of the Wild West.

Katherine Lee Bates showed us how the words to America the Beautiful were first written on a shirt sleeve.

Our own Mrs. Jacobson brought quilts and talked about the stories that quilts tell - including a long walk to Golden, Colorado!

2012_Co_Hist_Helen_Hunt_JacksonMrs. Moreton helped us finish it all of with some Colorado songs on a beautiful, sunny day as we sat2012_Co_Hist_Katherine_Lee_Bates outside on the playground facing Pikes Peak.  We don't yet know all of the reasons God put us here in Colorado, but we know He put us here for a reason.  We also know that He wants us to be a blessing to the people around us.  We convinced it's a blessing to be in and see His wonderful creation called Colorado every day!

Hard to beat!  It was a great week.

Cone Zone

2012_Parking_Lot_2It's Traffic Time again!  One of the rites of passage at drop-off and pick-up time is learning the parking lot system at school.  We're grateful to have JoAnn Miller helping us in the morning by directing traffic.  We also have several folks tag-teaming the cross-walk duties in the afternoons.

Here are a few tips to help you and the children stay safe this year:

- Remember the speed limit is 10 mph in the parking lot.  It's OK to go slower as well.  Take your time.

- Be aware of pedestrians and remember they have the "right-of-way."

- Drivers should stay off their cell phones while driving - even in a parking lot.

- Drivers driving should keep an eye out for cars backing from their parking slots.  Drivers backing out must watch for2012_Parking_Lot_1 pedestrians and moving vehicles behind them.

We're grateful for the courtesy you've shown already as some families get used to a new system.  It's a team effort and we're grateful for the "team play" you've demonstrated!
