INCREASED GOVERNMENT!

Isaiah 9:6,7 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.  Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David's throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.

     One of the top issues that politicians and others are talking about during this presidential election year is the idea of Big Government.

     One side says that our nation needs more government at every level to prosper.  Their idea is that if we have more governmental control guiding of the economy we will prosper. Because of men’s greed and self-centeredness government needs to guide our economy and growth and not just let a few prosper.  They remind us that many private sector companies are employed by the government and therefore to cut back government would mean to hurt private sector suppliers.

     The other side wants much less government intrusion into their lives.  They would love to see government off their backs and  let them be free to pursue free enterprise and the American dream.  This view says that government slows down the economy with regulations, licenses, zoning, boards of control and endless laws.  They would emphasize the idea that each citizen should realize, “I am responsible”  and willing to accept the results of my actions and not rely on a safety net of big government.

     My story related to the Waldo Canyon Fire is not nearly worthy of a front page edition story like possibly some of yours but it did have a profound effect on me and my wife.

     Early in the week we watched the progress of the fire. We  smelled it in the air and it irritated our eyes from time to time but that was the extent of it.  On Tuesday we thought a little about evacuation but it seemed a very remote possibility.

     Then on Wednesday night we heard the notices for different neighborhoods; pre -evacuation, evacuation and run for your lives and don’t look back.  The reports and images on the TV and radio showed us that the fire was getting closer and closer to our house.
